Medical complexity is rated by the specific clinical needs of the patient’s primary medical status and is affected by complicating factors, known as “secondary conditions”. Each case is evaluated and triaged (assigned) to a skilled specialist at a hospital that is best suited for treating the medical condition at hand. Treatment capability is a combination of physician and/or surgeon skills, hospital infrastructure, equipment and capabilities of the nursing and other clinical support staff.
